The Uganda Automotive Hub

Everything you need to know before you buy, import, or repair a car in Uganda.

We import cars from Japan for a living, and we've watched too many people get burned by things nobody told them. So we wrote it all down. Free guides, verified vehicle history, spare-parts sourcing, and a short list of the dealerships, markets and garages we'd actually send our own family to.

Guide 一

The First-Time Importer's Guide

Never imported a car before? This is the whole journey — from "I have savings and I want a car" to "it's registered in my name" — including the costs nobody warns you about after the car reaches Kampala.

01
Set your real budget
Your budget is not just the price of the car in Japan. A realistic budget = vehicle price + shipping + URA taxes (often 60–90% of the car's customs value) + registration and plates. As a rule of thumb, taxes and fees can come close to doubling the landed cost of an older vehicle. Decide your all-in ceiling first, then work backwards to what car that buys. We've seen people wire money for a beautiful Harrier and then struggle to clear it — don't be that person.
02
Choose an eligible vehicle
The rules changed on 1 July 2026, and mostly in your favour. URA now refuses vehicles manufactured before 2012 — and the environmental levy was rebuilt: nothing at all up to 9 years old, then a flat 50% of the customs value from 10 years. Under the old law, 8-and-9-year-old cars paid 20–50% extra; that charge is gone, so the sweet spot has widened to anything under 10 years old — and one model year across that line can mean millions. Popular, parts-friendly choices here: Toyota Harrier, Prado, Noah/Voxy, Subaru Forester, Nissan X-Trail.
03
Verify before you pay — always
Every car sold at Japanese auction has an auction sheet: an independent inspector's grade of its true condition, mileage and accident history. Never buy a car — from Japan or from a bond in Kampala — without seeing its verified history. This is the single cheapest insurance you will ever buy. Order a verified history report →
04
Purchase & shipping
Once you commit, the vehicle is purchased at auction, moved to port, and shipped RoRo to Mombasa, then trucked or driven under bond to Kampala. Typical timeline: 6–10 weeks door to door. You'll receive the export certificate, bill of lading and auction documents along the way — keep every one of them.
05
Customs & taxes at clearance
URA does not tax the price you paid — it taxes a pre-set customs value from its own Motor Vehicle Value Guide. On that value you pay import duty (25%), VAT (18%), withholding tax (6%), infrastructure levy (1.5%), excise duty on engines above 2000cc, and the age-based environmental levy. A licensed clearing agent files everything; we handle this entire stage for our clients.
06
After Kampala — the final costs
The car has landed, taxes are paid — you're not quite done. Budget for registration and number plates, third-party insurance (legally required), and a proper mechanical once-over before daily driving. The table below shows what to expect.

What it costs after the car reaches Kampala

The final stretch most first-timers never budget for. Figures are what our own clients have been paying recently; URA revises them from time to time, so confirm before paying anyone. Last checked: July 2026.

Guide 二

Buying From a Bond? Check Its Past First.

Most Japanese cars in Kampala's bonds were graded by independent inspectors before they ever left Japan. That record still exists — and you can see it before you pay a single shilling.

The odometer can be rolled back. The record can't.

Japanese auction records capture the true mileage at export. If the dashboard says 78,000 km but the record says 145,000 km — you just saved yourself millions.

Accident history is graded, not guessed

Auction grades like R or RA mean repaired accident damage. A clean repaint can hide a chassis pull — the auction sheet doesn't.

Negotiating power, in writing

A verified report either confirms you're getting a fair deal — or gives you the evidence to negotiate the price down, or walk away with confidence.

All you need is the chassis number

It's stamped on the vehicle and written on the logbook or import papers. Send it to us — we do the rest, usually within hours.

Where We Buy Spare Parts

Genuine parts from Japan and Dubai are closer than you think. These are the suppliers we use ourselves — we publish the list openly because you can check them yourself. And if you'd rather not gamble on shipping and customs, tell our sourcing desk what you need and we'll quote one landed price to Kampala.

International suppliers we rate

Established online stores that ship to Uganda. Listed for your independent use — prices, stock and shipping are theirs, not ours.

PartSouqDubai · Genuine OEM

Huge genuine-parts catalogue searchable by chassis/VIN, ships worldwide via DHL/UPS. Strong for Toyota, Nissan and Lexus OEM parts.

SSG.ASIADubai · Japanese brands

Deep catalogue for Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi and other Japanese marques. Good structured OEM search.

PartsOnClickDubai · Fast dispatch

24-hour international dispatch; strongest on German and American brands alongside Japanese lines.

ALLPARTS.AEDubai · Genuine & aftermarket

Mixed genuine and quality-aftermarket catalogue with online ordering and worldwide shipping.

EXIST.AEUAE · European stock

Wide catalogue with European supply lines — useful when a part is scarce in the Gulf.

Buying directly? Remember: the sticker price is not the landed price. International courier fees plus URA import duties on parts can add materially to the cost — factor both before comparing with Kampala prices.

Sourcing Desk — get a landed quote

Tell us the part and the vehicle. We source it from our vetted suppliers in Japan and Dubai and quote you one clear price — part, shipping and taxes included, delivered to Kampala. No surprises.

The chassis number guarantees an exact-fit part, first time.
Free to ask. You only pay if you accept the quote.
