URA's taxes regularly cost more than the car itself, and most people only find that out after they've paid a deposit. This calculator uses the same fields URA's own assessment asks for — CIF value, year, engine, body type, weight — and explains every line in plain English as it goes. Built by importers, not accountants.
URA doesn't tax the price you paid — it taxes the CIF value from its own valuation database. We've loaded that entire database into this page: 31,869 vehicles. Search yours by name — try the model code too (a 2016 Harrier ZSU60 and ASU65 are millions of shillings apart) — and tap it. The CIF, year and engine size fill themselves.
Vehicle not in the list? Check the URA guide directly or WhatsApp us — we'll look it up free. Then type the CIF yourself in Step 2.
The same details URA's assessment form asks for. Not sure about a field? The note under it tells you where to find the answer.
Rates used: import duty 25% of CIF · excise duty 10% of CIF for engines above 2,000cc (electric vehicles exempt) · VAT 18% of (CIF + duty + excise) · withholding tax 6% of CIF · infrastructure levy 1.5% of CIF · environmental levy under the law in force since 1 July 2026: nothing up to 9 years from the year of manufacture, then a flat 50% of CIF from 10 years (heavier goods vehicles exempt) · URA's system currently refuses vehicles manufactured before 2012. On top of the taxes, URA adds registration fees UGX 1,500,000, form fees UGX 18,000 and stamp duty UGX 35,000 — UGX 1,553,000 together.
The new financial year changed the game: the old levy charged 8-and-9-year-old cars 20–50% extra, and that charge is now gone — an 8 or 9 year old import costs millions less than it did in June 2026. Every line of this calculator was verified against URA's own portal calculator in late July 2026, line by line to the shilling. Some registered, tax-compliant businesses hold a withholding tax exemption and skip the 6% — ask us if that might be you.
Vehicle values come straight from the URA Motor Vehicle Value Guide — all 31,869 entries, downloaded from ura.go.ug in July 2026 and converted at the exchange rate shown (default 3,737.31, URA's own rate at last check, editable). URA reissues this database periodically; when they do, we reload it. A handful of entries in URA's own file contain errors ("#VALUE!" and the like) — those we left out rather than guess.
Cross-check us any time against URA's own calculator. If our numbers ever disagree with theirs, trust theirs — then tell us, so we can fix this page.
